How Your Cat Says "I Love You"

By Darcy Lockman

Amy Morgan of Brooklyn, New York, first knew that her calico cat Ruki loved her after he'd been living in her home for about two weeks. "I was in bed, and out of the corner of my half-opened eye, I saw him patiently waiting for me to wake up. The second I moved, he jumped on top of me, purring and kneading my chest wildly. Ever since, he's done that every morning. It's a great way to wake up."

But do cats love? And do they show it by kneading? "Absolutely," says Jackson Galaxy, a Redondo Beach, California-based cat behaviorist. "A friend of mine says it best: cats are the masters of detached love. She's talking about how cats can seem aloof and unfeeling. They express love in ways that baffle us."

Galaxy decodes seven of your furry friend's signals of l'amour.

1. Grooming
Grooming is the first way that kittens experience care. Mothers groom their kittens from birth, and so licking and being licked become associated with the serenity of being with mom. "Litter mates as they grow older, if they're adopted together, will groom each other for life," says Galaxy. If your cat is licking you, it's a sign of its affection.

2. Purring
A kitten is first guided to its mother's nipples by her purr. As a result, purring is associated with milk and the feeling of satisfaction. And kittens purr back. "It's almost like a Marco Polo type of game: call and response. It's life affirming to them," says Galaxy. "There's debate as to what the purr signifies later in a cat's life, but we do know they purr to sooth themselves -- the purring lowers their heart rate." If your cat is not injured or stressed, purring in your presence is likely related to feeling cared for by you, just as it was cared for by its mother.

3. Rubbing
Cats show affection to other cats, dogs and humans by rubbing against them. (Rubbing includes paw kneading, as in the case with Morgan's calico.) Says Galaxy, "When your cat puts its scent on you, it's saying something like, 'You and I belong together because I smell you on me and you smell me on you.' It's a scent complement." Kneading is also a throwback to kittenhood, when a kitten kneads its mom's teat in order to stimulate the flow of milk. Allowing the rubbing is essential to your relationship with your cat, and you won't smell a thing.

4. Mock Spraying
Male cats spray concentrated urine when claiming territory. In claiming you, your male cat may act as if he is spraying -- backing up toward you with a quivering tail -- but will not actually produce a spray. "They have so many scent glands to rub, they don't need to spray us," says Galaxy. Unfortunately for their human caretakers, an insecure cat may also show love by urinating in its owner's bed. "My clients sometimes mistake this for aggression. It's actually a compliment."

5. Gumming
Is Fluffy rubbing its gums on you? Yep, that's one more way in which your cat may attempt to blend its scent with yours.

6. Blinking
It's been referred to as "the cat I love you." This visual signal usually consists of a stare, followed by a blink, an open eye, and then a soft second blink. "It's actually a sign of trust, like showing you its belly," says Galaxy, who mimics the blink with cats he works with when trying to gain their confidence. "It's a form of communication I know works. Do it a few times with your own cat. They'll begin returning it to you."

7. Gifting
When your cat brings you a dead mouse, it's not a present in the traditional sense. "What seems like an obvious sign of affection is something that comes from a dog or human-centric viewpoint. When a cat brings a dead mouse home, they're saying, 'I bring this thing to my safe place.' It's more a demonstration that your cat feels supremely safe in the home you share. That, too, is a compliment."

To return your cat's affection, Galaxy recommends following its lead. "Experiment. Present your hand and see where your cat forces it. You'll find out what your cat likes to feel." Your cat will discover that people, too, are capable of feeling love.

very helpful

I've never been a cat person but after a friend rescued an orange Tabby named Baxter, I said I would take him in. I was scared of cats as silly as that sounds but Baxter won me over with his gently ways. Now, I can't imagine life with my Baxter, he's the sweetest and funniest cat ever. Thank you for listing some of the ways a cat says "I love you", it really helped me realize that Baxter really loves me and the feeling is mutual.

A cats tail !

This page is great , I was told that if your cats bends his/her tail when you come in it mean's they are really happy to see you & that they love you or when you stroke them & they do that. Is this true ??

reply to article

My Tiggy acts like a dog. She waits for me by the window at night, and comes running and loudly meowing to meet me when I come through the door. My mom, who lives with me, says that Tiggy gets agitated when I'm later than usual in my ETA. Tiggy also does some head-butting when I'm in bed to get some reassuring petting from me.

water drinking

Until a year ago I was not a cat lover. Now that has all changed. Allie came into our lives. She is a black Manx. She is beautiful. I would like to know why she is using her paws to drink water? We also have Lizzie and Zack. Zack also uses his paws to drink sometimes. I also get concern.

paws

my tabby, Danger, has an extra finger(?) on each paw... he uses his paws for eating , drinking and picking things up. He also loves to play fetch, but only with a crumpled up cigarette pack...he's a riot!

Adult Sister Cats suddenly hissing at each other?

My babies are (indoor only) sister cats that were adopted together and haved lived in harmony for over 6 years. Now, all of a sudden they are having defensive & hissing (also deep growling)issues. I am perplexed as I can't think of anything that has changed in our living situation. Please help! I rent an apartment & I know the neighbors can hear the kitty screams.-Desi

wierd behavior

I have been watching the cats for the neighbor and one of the cats hides in the cabinets. Stays in the dark all the time behind pots and pans. The cat knows how to open the cabnits and hides all over the house in places out of the way of any people.

My cat chino constant meowing

after my mother died 2 1/2 yrs ago, chino has not stopped crying day & night. There is only few moments/times in the day or when he is asleep that he does not cry. I don't know what to do. We've had him for 17 yrs now.Is it part of him getting old..??

Bitting

My Kitten is starting to bite all the time, mainly when she is playing. How do I get her to stop.

Patricia --

please call your vet! Pooping in odd places can be a behavior problem, but you should rule out health problems first. And the fact that she's losing hair is a sign that there's something wrong with her. Good luck, I hope it can be easily taken care of.

To Maria

Think of it this way. If your cat was human and she was crying day and night after mother died, wouldn't it be a good guess that the loss of mother was emotionally devastating to her? She may not understand what happened to mother. Or she is simply grieving and trying to express it to you. I suggest contacting an animal communicator who can help Chino with her grief.

declawed cat scratching

My 10 year old female cat was declawed way before I adopted her. However, even though she has no claws, she scratches at the foot of my bed and a wicker chair. Why?

what??

uhh??? u can make ur cat say that??

cat urinates in my bed

Ok Now I know the cat ( Hamburger) really loves me. He urinates in my bed about 1 time a week = forcing me to wash all the blankets. Yesterday he went to my neighbors apartment and urinated in his bed!!!! I guess he loves him too. He even did this once while I was in the bed. How can I stop this behavior? Help Help Help!!

Cat Clawing At Front Door

I have a male cat, neutered and have had him and his sister for about 4 years since they were kittens. They are tabbys. The boy has always been very vocal. In the last year, he has been going to the front door of the apartment and clawing and meowing, almost howling. It's not every day, but almost. I take him out to look and there's never anything out there. When I clap my hands and get him to stop, he does for awhile, then starts again. If I tell him to "come" he come running and jumps in my lap. Do you think this just attention getting? He's been to the vet regularly and is in good health.

anxious or what???

I have a female 5 yr. old cat I have has since she was 8 weeks old. She has always been skittish and non-touchable. Lateley she has been crying and rubbing and asking for attention. Yet, when I reach for her she runs off. If she sits in my lap she seems to enjoy a rub, but then gets jumpy and bounds off only to repeat the whole routine. It is very confusing. Is there a natural kitty valium or some sort of leveling out of emotions fix for her???

cat hygiene

He is not covering feces in litter box Other than that cat is 15 and very healthy.

Loving Cat :)

I have a one year old grey tabby cat, he's wonderful, I love him very much and I show him affection constantly, and one day I was laying in bed when I noticed my cat was starring at me. I looked over and he started winking at me, so I kept winking at him, until my boyfriend thought I was crazy haha but each time I would wink at my cat he would do it too. As well each night I wake up with my cat purring really loud and rubbing his little wet nose on my face haha I always felt like this was a sign of love am I right?

Super needy

I adopted my daughters Ragdoll over a year ago. My daughter had a large house and Lilly was in the background. I have a 2 bedroom apartment, and she is overly close. Always needing, crawling on my lap, can't get close enough. Very moody if I am gone too long--really acts this out. She pouts when I am getting ready to leave. Right now she is trying to rub my hand while I type. I have always loved cats, but she is overwhelmingly needy.

My Cat Sweet-Pea

Almost 3-1/2 years ago when we were going through a bad time with my brother dying of cancer I came home from a rather upsetting day and saw several of the neighborhood kids gathered around the complex garbage dumpster laughing and thowing stones,I walked over to see what the big attraction was. Here they were stoning this little tiny kitten,I proceeded to chase them away climb in the dumpster and free the little baby, however at this point she ran away from me but I continued daily to go out and feed her and try to hold her.Other neighbors would say you'll never get her.Well after several weeks of trying and then this one particular month we had a hurricane coming and I knew I had to make a decisions,I already had 2 beautiful cats,so I sat down on the curb and looked at her she was still very skitish,I said "Dear God please give me an answer do you want me to take this precious baby into my home" at that she climbed into my lap for the very first time she rubbed against me and kneeded me and purred,I took this as my answer. When I took her to the Vet,I asked them to check her for the normal diseases, then to spay and declaw her,she was now a member of my family and every day since that day I have been paid back with such Love, she is a constant companion,no matter where I go in my place she is there, she sleeps with me,she sits in my window and waits for me when I am gone.If Iam sad or depressed she is right there.and I truly believe she remembers the kids who stoned her even though they have grown up,because she will actually make a growl sound when she sees them. She will still jump up on me and kneed me and purr so loud and she has to be at my side constantly.I truly thank the day I made the decision to take her in

cat behaviour

I've had cats since childhood and understand them as well as anyone can. The arched back and high tail with a crook in the end of it shows a VERY happy cat. "Skittish or what?" Yes, skittish, but often the nature of cats. Some just like to be petted only on their own time, and sometimes act if they can't make up their minds. Have you tried following her to see if she's trying to tell you something? Otherwise when she turns away or jumps off your lap, ignore her, and she'll be back. Catlosing hair? Could be stress, could be an allergy, could be a skin condition, depending if it is thinnning all over, or coming out in clumps, or if it is losign hair because of constant licking (various medical and psychological possible reasons for that too). Cat clawing and howling at the door? Wants out, just to go out. If you don't want him to go out, you'll have to ignore the behaviour until it stops. Taking him out in your arms is just teasing him. Never leave a cat unattended on a leash. "Declawed cat scratching"...cats just like the activity of scratching, feels good. "Cat biting"... they will do that in play and should be discouraged. don't shout, don't hit, best training tool is to stop play immediately the biting starts, say NO, and turn away. Cat will learn that this pleasant activity stops if he bites. "Weird behaviour"...most cats when transposed to a new environment will react by hiding for a while == I had one cat who lived in the linen closet for ages after we moved to a new house. Small spaces and/or a place where they cannot be reached feel "safe". TALK... I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to talk to your pets in a conversational friendly voice about anything at all. Cats especially love what I call the "cat voice", murmuring lovingly, crooning to them, or high and light, telling them how beautiful they are, how wonderful they are, this makes you speak affectionately and warmly and they pick up on that, and love it! "Adult sister cats hissing"...this is a puzzler. Has one become more aggressive to the other? Could one be injured or sick? Are you paying more attention to one than the other? Sorry not to be more help on this one. "Gizmo"... you're freaking yourself out! Cats sense a change in family dynamics. Perhaps he knows you are upset and wants to help. Perhaps the absence of your husband (a male) has made him feel more important in the household. Even neutered cats retain their nature of male or female, and react in different ways to men and women, or their presence. "Water drinking"... this is so cute given that cats are not supposed to like water! It's just an idiosyncracy. some cats and dogs do the same thing with food, use their paws like little hands. "Paws"... those extra toes are called "dewclaws" and are very common. "Running through the house"... this is just a perfect example of wacky cat behaviour, and one of the reasons we love them. A well-known comedian had a great skit about how a cat will be in one room then - Zip, I have to be in another room RIGHT NOW. A scream to watch. Cats have a wonderful ability to amuse themselves and this is one amusing example of this. "Hair rubbing"... I had a cat who did this too, loved to nestle in my hair. I'm not sure if it means they were weaned too early, and are dimulating the feel of lying next to mummy's tunny hair, or what. For sure he loves you to want to be so close, especially to your mouth which could be used to bite him (in cat thought). So he trusts you and loves you a lot! "Bringing home mice, birds"...I've never heard the reason to be that it is because they feel "safe" in your house. More likely a source of pride, and generosity -- "look what I brought you and am sharing with you", or an enclosed space in which to "play" with the prey. My cats continually bring their "treasures" through the cat door to get them into the house. I have been able to make many rescues this way, as they are foten alive at this point. One thing to remember, don't shout at the cat, they'll just stop bringing them home. Say "good cat", approach slowly, sometimes they'll run away with it, sometimes they'll drop it for a moment and look lovingly at you -- at which point pick up the cat and stow in a room with the door shut while you attend to the victim. sometimes they'll let you approach them slowly and then you can pry their mouths open so they drop whatever it is. Hope all this helped. We love our cats!!

Water Freaks! Help!

Help! Have 2 tabbys 6mos old, love to play w/water. They splash and play attack their water in its bowl, totally emptying it. Have it in a tray to catch mess but they absorb excess on their fur by playing in it and end up w/no water to drink. They don't mind being squirted w/water bottle at all. Have tried all sorts of things. Any ideas out there of how to stop this?

Our red tabby male, Purrrcival regularly buts, we have friends with large cats - Canadian Lynx and Bob cats that regularly bu for affection. Rollin

What is This?

My male cat, adopted at age 5, often gets a piece of blanket in his mouth and proceeds to knead with all four feet, purring all the while. If you remove the piece of blanket from his muth, he stops immediately, otherwise, this can go on for several minutes. What is this about? Cheryl

Cat Biting = Affection?

What about our cat who crawls on my lap or my husband's, purring and then we pet her, but after a little while she gets "playful" - that's what we've called it so far. She starts biting and getting aggressive when we push her away because we don't like the biting and grabbing. I'm ready to get rid of her because of this and some other issues! Help?

question on biting

Sam I am does not bite, but while loving us, purring, head butting, he will take our hand in his mouth but not bite, just lightly nip, very lightly. what does this mean.

Problems with our cat

Hi, I'm Alyssa, our family has been having problems with our cat. Two or so months ago our cat has been attacking us for no apparent reason. Sometime last year we had to bottle feed him because his mother abandoned when he was only three days old. Why is he doing this? What does it mean? please reply back

Cat hair loss

If you are noticing that your unfixed female cat is pulling out her hair or has balding spots, is stressed out and easily frightening or is urinating out of her litter box, get her fixed! My indoor cat did this for 1 1/2 years before i figured out what the problem was. I thought she was literally crazy. Now she is still a little skittish, but otherwise a normal and happy cat! I just wish i would have known sooner.

Our cat has begun howling & growling at night

Our 4 1/2 old neutered male cat recently began howling and also growling during the night now. He has always slept on the bed with us, but goes into another room to howl. When he growls (which is very disturbing, by the way), he is usually either staring at the bed or laying on the bed. Has anyone else been through this? What could this mean and what can we do to stop it?

new cat.

Our daughter & her husband just had a new baby so we got our daughters cat to keep. he is 13 years old. He's been here before & was very comfortable here before. Now we have 2 small dogs here also which were rescue dogs. The cat is not to sure about them yet.How long will it take.

Kitty kitty kitty...

okay... i would say every cat i have ever had loved me dearly they have all done all of those to me... I love them too... and they are the most incredible creatures in the world...

licking, biting, snoring

My new cat, kitty 1 y/o, loves fingers! When you try to pet him he usually backs up sniffs your fingers and then licks them and chews on the towards the back of his mouth, kind of like he's teething or something... any suggestions on what this is... he also kneads the pillows/blankets, purring loudly, then continues while humping them. When he's finished he then "cleans" his manly parts. He's fixed. Any suggestions? Also my fat cat, Bubba 3 y/o and 16lbs despite dieting and exercise, snores/wheezes when he sleeps. Sometimes when he's just laying around... should i be worried. He doesnt seem to be having a problem breathing and it's not all the time. any suggestions? My other cat, satan 1 y/o siamese mix, loves to give kisses... you say, give me kisses and he puts is nose up like to smell your face and waits for a kiss on the nose! and is always running around the house meowing/purring- like he's saying "Hmmmm" my cat's are great!! Love em to death.

my sick cat

help-my healthy cat is now running a temp, nose hot,not himself, laying all the time now. not feeling well. dry nose, did eat a little this morn.

answers...

Just was reading and thought id answer some of the question s posted here...anyway. to a cats tail! i don't know but i do know they love being petted at least my siamese does. to paws at baskets that is a kitten trait if he head claws hed be kneading your baskets. it is also called ',making biskuts'. It is a trait from kittenhood when they kneeded their mothers teats to get milk thus when they 'paw' as you call it or knead they are very happy. as for the running. its something indoor cats do when they have too much energy. play with your cat more and she/he won't do it so much. thats all.

Staring

I catch my cat staring at me a lot. Many times she starts blinking and I know what that means. I'm not sure what it means when she just stares and if I stop looking at her sometimes she'll lightly hit me to get my attention. Eventually she walks off when she's done. Midnite will even go to another room and stare. Sometimes I think she's not really happy with me and needs to get away from me. I know I bug her if I pet her too long, but she's just the cutest cat. Midnite has much attitude and is spoiled rotten. I really wanted a boy cat. Thought I had picked a male...I didn't look well enough obviously. I think we communicate well, I just want to be better. Any suggestions?
