Purina has had several recalls throughout their long history, but given that they have been around the pet food industry for quite a while, this isn’t much of a surprise. Recalls are a good thing to be aware of, but they can happen for a variety of reasons. 

Here’s a brief overview of Purina’s recalls in the last two decades: 

2019 

In March of this year, they issued a voluntary recall on one of it’s Muse wet cat food recipes after consumers reported finding rubber pieces inside the food. 

2016 

A few varieties of Pro Plan wet dog food sold in tubs were recalled due to inadequate vitamin and mineral levels. 

2013

In 2013, Purina voluntarily recalled Purina ONE dog food due to some suspected salmonella contamination. Earlier in the year, they also removed their Waggin’ Train products from the market after the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets found traces of antibiotic residue.

2012 

A single batch of Purina Veterinary Diets OM Overweight Management Feline Formula was recalled due to low levels of thiamine. 

2011

Twice in 2011, some dry cat foods were recalled due to potential salmonella contamination. 

2007 

Purina recalled Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy dog food due to potential melamine contamination
